Red Star

©1989 Andrew Calhoun, unrecorded

Red star, blue star
Dead star and the new star
Round and round we go
We stop and yes and no
And we sing about New York City
Sing about loving all night
Sing of the pain and the pity
Sing of the sorrow and spite
Spin around, you're only fifty
Spin around, you're only five
Spin around, raise your dress up
Spin around, you're still alive
I'm rising to this occasion
Coming across the woodpile
Easing into autumn with a tired smile
Don't tell me it's over
I don't buy that
I'm leaving you, lover
Where the world is flat
Over yonder in the darkness
Out in the fairy's field
I'm hurtin' bad and scared witless
Follow and you shall be healed
Follow and you shall be broken
Follow and you shall be whole
Follow and the door is open
Stammer and the door is closed

Don't you see me turning bitter?
Don't you see me going blind?
Cowering though I know better
Trading life for peace of mind
The war goes on without us, darling
And love returns without our love
There always hope but never heaven
Only rest, and never peace
Always steps, but never even
Fools who find the golden fleece
I wanted it to be a good dream
Me and you and the parade
I didn't want to find the prison
Underneath the bed we made
I didn't want to see the shadow
Cast by that great, shining light
See it take form from your body
See it bleach that cheek to white
See it leave you where you started
Back in that old, tired slum
That's what happens, leaving thwarted
Those who curse what they come from

Over yonder in the darkness
Out in the fairy's field
I'm hurtin' bad and scared witless
Follow and you shall be healed
